Holiday Schedule Update

Happy Holidays Soleado Parents,

There is a change of plans for our ALL SCHOOL SING schedule.   There is more rain in our future, which is a good thing, but it will create a bit of chaos for our ALL SCHOOL SING plans.

So to make all of our lives a bit simpler, we are canceling the outside ALL SCHOOL SING for parents this year.  Instead, the students will meet in the MPR and sing their songs for each other that day.

BUT…we have not forgotten you!  Parents can participate on Thursday for our scheduled Holiday music performances.

The Thursday performance schedule for parents is as follows:

9-10:30am -4th and 5th grade music concert and song performances in the MPR

11:00-12:00pm- 1st and 2nd grade song performances in the MPR

1:00-1:30pm- TK and Kindergarten song performance in the MPR

and

3rd grade will invite their parents in on Wednesday next week at 2:30 for their class party and singing performance in the Vista building.

Wishing all of our families holiday joy and a Happy New Year,

Mrs. Stutzel

Halloween Parade Reminder

October 28, 2014

Dear Parents and Guardians,

One of the most enjoyable fall events for the "Soleado Suns" is our annual Halloween Parade. This colorful and fun-filled event for our students will be held on Friday, October 31st. The classroom parade will begin at 1:30 P.M. on the blacktop in front of the amphitheater and conclude at approximately 2:30 P.M. Students can wear their costumes to school and bring their accessories to use at the parade.

Please remember to leave any items not acceptable for school at home. These items include imitation weapons of any kind, or any other item that might pose a danger to other students. Make certain all costumes are safe for walking. This is very important for the safety of your child and the safety of others.

Parents are welcome and encouraged to join us as the students and faculty participate in the parade. Seating for parents will be in the amphitheater. We are looking forward to seeing you on October 31st, at 1:30P.M. Remember to bring your cameras. These are life's moments that you will want to capture and save (please note that posting any pictures to the internet is a privacy issue and must be used with caution.)

I look forward to seeing you at the Halloween Parade!

Sincerely,

Gina Stutzel

Community: Halloween safety tips for motorists and pedestrians.

Dear Nixle User,

Safety Tips for Motorists

Driving is a complex task, requiring a motorist's full attention. Drive cautiously, anything that diverts your eyes or attention from the roadway; even for 1-2 seconds, could result in tragedy.

The bottom line, whatever the distraction, "It's Not Worth It!" Be aware and vigilant of pedestrians and reduce your speed while traveling through neighborhoods.

The law is explicit: Driving with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .08% or more is illegal, but even with a lower BAC a driver may be a hazard and taken to jail.

A DUI crash or arrest can be averted in a number of ways:

- Not drinking, if you are the driver
- Riding with someone who has not been drinking
- Using public transportation
- Calling a taxi or a friend
- Staying where you are for the night.

A popular option among couples and groups in recent years has been selecting a designated driver—a person who abstains from drinking so he or she will be a sober driver.

Always be cautious of your surroundings. Be on the lookout for children crossing and running across the street

Never pass a vehicle that is stopped for pedestrians.

Look carefully behind your vehicle for approaching pedestrians before backing up.

Safety Tips for Pedestrians

Use crosswalks and follow traffic signals when crossing at street lights but still pay close attention to vehicles on the road.

Be careful at intersections where drivers may fail to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians while turning onto another street.

Before stepping in front of a car make eye contact with the driver. Make sure they see you, that they plan on stopping and they have time to stop.

Increase your visibility by carrying a flashlight and wearing some sort of reflective clothing.

It is safest to walk on a sidewalk.

Pay attention. Always be aware of your surroundings and watch for vehicles when crossing a street or stepping off a curb.

Don't go into a house to get candy or eat unwrapped candy and food.

Be careful crossing multiple lanes of traffic. Make sure each lane of traffic is clear before you cross.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nearly three out of four pedestrian deaths occur:

- In urban environments
- At non-intersections
- During the nighttime and many involve alcohol

The California Highway Patrol encourages everyone to have a joyful, safe and memorable Halloween weekend, but please be careful and make it home safely to your loved ones. We hope these tips help you stay safe. Happy Halloween!

The California Highway Patrol has primary responsibility of traffic laws in residential neighborhoods in the 140 unincorporated communities in Los Angeles, including Altadena, East LA, East Pasadena, Hacienda Heights, Ladera Heights, Marina Del Rey and Stevenson Ranch.

Outdoor Science School

Hello Everyone,

I'm sending this email to everyone in PTA, even if you don't have a 5th grader, so that you know what is going on.  The Outdoor Science School 5th grade trip happening November 3rd - 7th in Malibu might not happen this year unless we get 3 more moms and 1 more dad to go on the trip and chaperone.  We don't want any of our 5th graders to miss out on this educational and enriching experience.  Please consider being a chaperone if you have a 5th grader.  Please spread the word to anyone you know that has a 5th Grader who is going.  If you would like more information on what is expected/required from a chaperone, please email Mrs. Ellis or Mrs. Elliot (emails above in the cc'd line) with your questions.

Japanese, Korean, and Chinese Parent Association leaders, please spread the word to your organizations.

Thank you,

Eva Ruiz

ELAC Board Members and General Meeting Summary

October 9, 2014

Soleado Parents:

I would like to thank all of the parents that were involved in the voting process to elect our English Learner Advisory Committee Board Members for the 2014-2015 school year.

Our elected representatives are:

Mitsue Shioda, Akane Oiwa, Maria Yoojung Kim, Wendy Ser, Kimberly Ryan, and Gina Stutzel

The ELAC Board will be meeting 4 times this year to discuss the English language student program offered at Soleado. The purpose of the ELAC Board is to guide the English language program, have an on-going responsibility to review the program implementation, and annually review the components of the Site Plan and School Improvement Plan that pertain to English learners.

Summary of our ELAC General Meeting held on September 29

In our annual ELAC General Meeting, we discussed the components of our program which includes the "Pull Out" and "Push In" model of instruction. Our ELD instructors, Mrs. Ryan and Mrs. Ser, will share the responsibility of both methods. Beginning level learners will get extra instruction with Mrs. Ryan using the "Pull Out" method. Mrs. Ryan and Mrs. Ser will also be supporting the students in the classroom during instruction and independent work.

We are working with the same budget that we had last year. We are paying for 2 teachers which will provide more coverage in the classroom then we had in previous school years. We are offering an ELL Homework Club for 3-5 grades this year. Last year, we had more intervention money through a different fund which gave us the opportunity to have a 1st-5th grade Homework Club. We do not have those funds this year, so we will continue to provide the 3-5th grade program which is covered in our ELL site budget.   But again, we have a more robust program during the school day because we now have 2 instructors instead of only one instructor like in previous years.

The ELAC committee will be discussing the SBAC assessment this year and what accommodations will be made for the ELL students during the test. We will keep the community updated with testing information as it is being shared with us. Mrs. Ryan provided the parents with strategies to help with English learning at home. We also talked about instructional technologies and how they played a role in language acquisition.

All the information that was shared can be found on our Edline Website under ELL http://www.edline.net/pages/Soleado_Elementary . The teachers and I will continue to post relevant information throughout the school year to support the ELL students and their parents using our Edline site.  Please visit the site and if you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me or Mrs. Ryan at ryank@pvpusd.net and stutzelg@pvpusd.net

Lastly, there will be 4 DLAC meetings held at the District Office. Those dates are October 23, December 11, February 12, and April 30. Our ELAC Board meeting dates are November 18, January 20, March 24, and May TBA. Our ELAC meeting will be held at our school and is open to any community members that would like to attend.

Online Book Fair

Dear Soleado Families,

iBerries Art Contest Winners

Soleado Families,

Recently, Mrs. Donahoe promoted an iBerries Art Contest and encouraged all Soleado Students to participate. Students could submit their iBerries yogurt art designs to be exhibited at the iBerries on Deep Valley Dr. We just received word from the owner that a winner has been chosen and their art will be displayed on the iBerries in-store video monitor Saturday, September 20. He really enjoyed the other art designs submitted, so along with the winner, he will be showing all submissions from Saturday, September 20 to Saturday, September 27.

If you have time, you might want to swing by and take a look at the wonderful creative designs submitted by our Soleado Suns.
