3.  We need people to help organize our prizes, craft supplies and materials in advance of Sunday.  This will be between 2-5 Friday afternoon and 2-5 Saturday afternoon.

4.  If you have party favors that they can donate as prizes, we are always in need of those.

5.  Can you loan your  EZ up tent and/or portable table?  We probably need about 6-8 more of each.  These should be marked with your family's name and dropped off anytime this week at school, or during Saturday 2-5 or before 9 on Sunday.

Skechers Walk Registration

Dear SoleadoFamilies, Teachers and Friends,

It's that time of year again and I hope you can join me in person or in spirit and support the 5th Annual Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk! It is on Sunday, October 27th at the Manhattan Beach Pier. All monies raised through your registration fees (if you designate PEF) directly benefit our schools! (Last year, PEF received $105,000 from Skechers for our participation.)

We only have 2 weeks left and our goal is to have at least 135 walkers on the Soleado team. As of right now, we have 30 people registered so we have a long way to go!

It doesn't matter if you can actually attend the walk or not; you can register to "virtually" walk and be there in spirit. It really is a win-win for all. The registration process is easy. Visit the walk website at www.skechersfriendshipwalk.com, click on the "Register" button, and then click on "Create A Friendship Walk Account."  Fill in your personal information, join the SoleadoTeam and remember to designate the Peninsula Education Foundation as your charity of choice. I am listed as our Team Captain so you will see my name at the top of the list. Say "yes" and help us ROCK this walk for the 5th year in a row!

Halloween Carnival October 20

Soleado Families,

Sunday October 20th is our annual Halloween Carnival and all families and friends are invited!  Students are welcome to wear their Halloween costumes and participate in our costume contest, where we will award prizes for the most original, funniest, scariest, and cutest costumes.  Parents are welcome to compete in our Halloween-themed cake decorating contest or our "cake walk" where they can win a fabulous Halloween cake.

We will have a petting zoo, a reptile tent, face painting, carnival games, inflatable jumpers, a photo booth, food, and more!

Hello everyone,

Happy Monday Soleado Families!! This week is full of important events and activities that you should mark on your calendars. One very important task that we need everyone to do is join our "GROUP" on Member Planet. Our goal is to enlist all of our Soleado families as members and use the site as our primary communication forum. Please visit the site frequently to stay on top of school news and updates. Our goal is to cut back on money spent on copies.........ultimately we would love to eliminate this portion of our budget all together and allocate those funds towards school supplies/technology upgrades and many other expenses for our kids. You should have received a letter from your room parent team last week. This letter outlines the room parent roles and describes the voluntary donation you can make. This voluntary program will provide funds to be used to purchase extra supplies for projects and class gifts for the teacher.  Donations are due by the 18th.  Please use the envelope that was sent home with the child or make sure to put the class treasurer name on an envelope so the teacher knows where it needs to go.

Character Counts Pillar For The Month: Caring.

 
The Character Counts Coalition uses the color red to symbolize the pillar of Caring. 
This month our students will be focusing on the pillar of Caring.  There are two main ideas that apply to the pillar of caring.

• Concern for others: Show compassion and empathy. Be kind, loving and considerate in your actions. Be grateful for the things people do for you. Forgive the shortcomings of others. Don’t be mean or cruel to others. Be sensitive of other's feelings. 
• Compassion: Children can learn that people should be considerate and caring. Instead of ignoring hurt, confusion, anger and sadness they can learn that people should reach out to one another. As Plato quoted “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a harder battle!” we can never tell what difficulties another person is facing, and your kind word or action might make all the difference.

A few important reminders going into next week….

• Mark your calendars for our Community Night on October 23^rd at 6:00pm.   We will begin to introduce the Common Core State Standards and what that means for the students at Soleado Elementary School.

• Red Brick Pizza and iBerries Night Out- October 8^th all day fundraising event

Thanks to everyone for a great Book Fair this week!  I loved seeing our students reading their new books this week and feeling their positive energy.  Next week, our Booster Club should know how much money we raised with the Book Fair and, more importantly, what that means for your student at Soleado.

We were fortunate to have many volunteers this week, many working at the Book Fair for the first time.  We want to especially recognize Jennifer Wong, Steve Wong, Micky Shinozaki, Sunnie Suhr and Teresa Lee for putting in extra time to make our Fair a success.  Thanks to everyone, our students had a lot of fun, and our classrooms received many new books.

PVPUSD Collective Bargaining Update

October 4, 2013

Several bargaining sessions have been held this budget year with the Palos Verdes Faculty Association (PVFA) and another all-day meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 8th.   In addition, informal conversations have also taken place between scheduled bargaining sessions.

There are two Board of Education meetings next week where collective bargaining topics related to PVFA, the California School Employee Association (CSEA), and non-represented employees will be discussed.   The Board of Education needs to have complete budget information for the y ear and that information is being updated now.  The Governor and legislature approved a radical new funding mechanism for public schools in July and the details have slowly trickled in.

For the past 4-5 years, school districts in California were forced to make budget reductions that negatively impacted employees and the instructional program in order to survive State budget cuts.  These reductions included layoffs, furlough days, larger class sizes, salary reductions, and less support for extracurricular activities, instructional supplies/materials, and technology.

The budget picture has improved this year for school districts in California, but not enough to make up for all the reductions made since 2007-08.

At this time, we have offered proposed settlements to both PVFA & CSEA.   Our settlement proposal to PVFA includes the restoration of work/instructional days, increased District contribution for medical benefits, two-year District calendar, clarification on length of work day, revised evaluation procedures, and professional development guidelines.  This proposal has not led to a settlement.

The estimated cost of the current PVFA proposal is about $2.4 million a year, ongoing.  This does not include the cost of extending the same financial package to other District employees.  District leaders are open to exploring ways to reach a settlement, but the use of one-time money (i.e. reserves) to fund on-going costs could impact our ability to balance the District budget.  There are also other demands on the budget that need to be addressed.  For example, since August 12th, the Board has approved approximately $750,000 in new costs for restoring counselors and teaching positions, but that has not resolved all class size concerns.

The PVPUSD track record of success has been based on the whole community coming together (teachers, staff, support organizations, and taxpayers) to support the school district.  Working together in a spirit of cooperation we will find common ground and workable solutions.  The collective bargaining process in California (Educational Employment Relations Act) is a very structured system that delineates the rights and responsibilities of employers and employee organizations.  This process can sometimes be slow, irritating, and cumbersome, but over the years it has led to mutually acceptable agreements in PVPUSD.

 This year we have exciting news for students that participate in the program. For every submission, you will receive a membership to LACMA's NextGen program. Membership includes one free child admission and one free adult. 

Please include your child's Date of Birth on entry form if you would like to receive the membership.


Reflections Program – Introduction

The Reflections Arts Recognition Program is a national arts recognition and achievement program for students. Since 1969, over 10 million students across the nation have taken part in this popular PTA program.
The excitement and enthusiasm that the program generates for students, parents, schools and communities is unmatched with the majority of California PTAs participating in the program at all PTA levels.
That's why the Reflections Program provides an excellent opportunity for students of all ages to:

• Unleash their creative talents and be inspired
• Express themselves imaginatively in their artwork
• Experience the joy and fun of making art
• Tap into critical thinking skills to create art inspired by the annual theme
• Receive positive recognition for their original works of art

As an added bonus, in showcasing and celebrating student talent, the Reflections Program increases community awareness of the importance of the arts in education.
