Principal's Message Click above for Mrs. Stutzel's video message.  (This time it works!) Green Ribbon Week: April 21-25 Wear Green all week Reuse! Bring a a used towel for the guide dog program. Pack a 100% green lunch for your child- No plastic disposable drinking bottles and no plastic baggies!  Kids will be recognized and rewarded! Monday-  It's GREEN Week- Walk to school day! Less driving means fewer emissions and every gallon of gas saved keeps 20 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. Tuesday-  It's Earth Day- Beautification day- Soleado kids will clean up their community! ​Wednesday-  Soleado Farmers Market after school, please come buy some of our student-grown veggies!  Thursday-  LIGHTS OUT at Soleado today to teach students about conserving energy!  Students and teachers will go outside for a small period of time. Waste Management will be visiting 2nd Graders! Friday-  REUSE! Toy Drive!! Bring an unwanted toy that will be donated to a local Los Angeles children's based charity. Saturday- REUSE! Goodwill will be at Soleado on this day to collect your unwanted goods!   E- WASTE at Soleado May 17th! In an effort to conserve paper and be more green, please read your monthly Soleado Blast Newsletter!  Other things happening in our community: RPV's FREE DOCUMENT SHREDDING & ELECTRONICS WASTE COLLECTION DAY & FREE MULCH GIVEAWAY Celebrate Earth Day Weekend!  EDCO and the City of RanchoPalos Verdes are sponsoring a free shredding event on Saturday, April 26, 2014 from 9 a.m. to noon at the RPV Civic Center (City Hall Parking lot) located at 30940 Hawthorne Boulevard. This free event is the perfect opportunity for Rancho Palos Verdes residents to safely dispose of personal documents. During this event, certified document shredding trucks will be on-site to shred your documents on-site Earth Week at Terranea:  http://www.terranea.com/palos-verdes-events?year=2014&month=04 In partnership with the International Bird Rescue, Terranea will release a rehabilitated pelican into the wild at 10:00 a.m. on April 21st at the Terranea Beach Cove. Guests are invited to come and view the release and learn more about wildlife bird rescues. The organization operates two year-round aquatic bird rescue centers in California, which care for over 5,000 birds every year, and has led wildlife rescue efforts for more than 200 oil spills in over a dozen countries. No advance reservations needed.  International Fair Planning Meeting ​ Our Annual International Fair will be on Sunday, May 18th this year.  The information and planning meeting will be on Thursday, April 17th after morning drop-off in the Parent Resource Room at Soleado.  If you'd like your culture represented at the Fair, come to the meeting to sign up for a booth.  The more the merrier! The Science Fair is recruiting approx. 10 volunteer judges to evaluate the entries.  We are looking for parents with science, engineering background or those with a high interest in science.  Judging will take place on 4/16 (Wed) from 3 to 4 pm in the MPR.  Mrs. Ellis (5th Grade) will provide the training to all judges.  Interested families please contact Linh Tu (Science Fair parent coordinator) at linh.tu2@gmail.com.  OR use our sign up link here.  Your help to make the Science Fair a success is greatly appreciated! The Next PTA/Booster Club General Meeting Our last meeting of the school year is Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at 9:00 A.M. in the MPR.   Come hear Mr. Kuykendall, Principal at Ridgecrest and Mrs. Villaescusa, our very own TK teacher and Andrea Sala from PEF.  Also, we will have Ms. Hlavac giving us a recap of attending Capitol Convoy.  We have many guest speakers! Costume Closet needs volunteers in April and May. Earn costume rental credits and help out our PVPUSD Schools.  Soleado's 5th grade 'Walk Through the Revolution' will be on May 22nd followed by the Colonial Fair on the 28th. For further information contact: donna.epstein1@gmail.com ​ Soleado Social Hour Dates We have started to use the Parent Resource Room as a place for parents to meet occasionally to gather and socialize to get to know one another - especially the parents of younger grades and new families to our school.  We will have a standing Soleado Social Hour at school on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of the month from 8:30 - 9:30am in the Parent Resource Room April 11th and 25th. A Bonus Art At Your Fingertips! Thanks to the Soleado Student Council all students will do a 6th Art At Your Fingertips project again this year.  The project will be Multi-FACE-eted, a self-portrait print collage based on colorful prints ​by Andy Warhol.   4th/5th grades - Fri April 18, 1:20pm-2:50pm 3rd grade - Tues April 22, 12:50-2:30pm TK - Wed April 23, 10:00-11:00am 2nd grade - Wed April 23, 12:50-2:30pm 1st grade - Thurs April 24, 12:50-2:30pm Kinder - Fri April 25, 12:15-2:00pm If you would like to volunteer in your child's classroom for this Art At Your Fingertips project please contact Trudy Bragg at trudybragg@verizon.net Also, 5th Grade "Sill Life In Lines" artwork will be on display at iBerries and the Palos Verdes Library Main Branch display case for the first 2 weeks of April.  Go visit and enjoy! PEF Main Event Is In Full Swing! Save the date for May 10th!  The theme this year is very fun – Let's BOND – a James Bond inspired event!  It's going to be a fabulous evening!  Casino tables, auction, live entertainment and dancing!  FUN! It's really best if you can coordinate a table or two from your school.  We do seat people by school and it creates a lot of enthusiasm when we have the school cheering by section.   If you have friends who want to volunteer at Main Event, we LOVE grown up volunteers and have plenty of jobs for them!  See pvpef.org for more info. 5th Grade Percussion Class!       This class is designed for 5th graders going into 6th grade music at Miraleste, Palos Verdes, or Ridgecrest intermediate schools next fall.   All levels are welcome! There is no charge for the class. Lesson materials will be provided, but students need to come to class with a drum pad and a pair of drumsticks.
